Can You Recover Photos From a Dead or Water-Damaged Phone?
A phone that will not turn on is scary for one reason, and it is almost never the phone itself. It is the photos. The newborn in the hospital, the grandparent who has passed, the trip you will never take again, the everyday pictures you assumed would always be there. If your phone is dead or water-damaged and your stomach dropped when the screen stayed black, take a breath. In a great many cases, the answer to can you recover the photos is yes.
Here is the reassuring truth we see week after week doing doorstep repairs across Brockville, Kingston, Ottawa, Cornwall, Belleville and the rest of Eastern Ontario: the part that holds your photos is usually the toughest part in the whole phone. The screen, the battery and the board can all fail while the storage sits there completely fine. This guide explains what dead really means, why the storage chip is the key, what to do and what never to do, and how our free, no recovery no fee assessment works.
What Dead Actually Means (It Is Rarely the Photos)
When people say their phone is dead, they usually mean one of several very different things, and each has its own outlook for your photos:
- Dead battery or won't power on: The battery has aged, drained flat or failed, so the phone shows nothing. A fresh battery often brings it right back with everything intact.
- Black or broken screen: The phone may actually be running, but the display shows nothing. The photos are untouched, the phone just cannot show them to you.
- Water damage: A spill or drop caused a short or corrosion. This one is time sensitive, but the storage often survives if you act fast.
- Won't boot past the logo: The phone tries to start, loops, or freezes. This is usually software or board related, not a storage failure.
- Cracked but data intact: Physically smashed, yet the data underneath is perfectly fine and waiting to be copied off.
Notice the pattern. In almost all of these, the photos are not the thing that broke. That is not wishful thinking, it is how phones are built. For the closely related question of whether the phone itself can be saved, our guide on whether water damage is repairable on smartphones goes deeper.
Why the Storage Chip Is the Key, and Why It Usually Survives
Inside every phone, your photos, videos and messages live on a small flash storage chip soldered to the logic board. This chip is not the same as the screen, the battery, the charging port or the glass. It has no moving parts, it is sealed, and it is surprisingly resilient. That single fact is the reason data recovery works so often.
When a phone dies, the failure is usually somewhere else in the chain: the battery cannot hold charge, the charging port is corroded, the screen ribbon is torn, or a spill shorted a component. Fix or bypass the broken link and the storage chip is still sitting there holding your memories. Even when a phone cannot be revived at all, a specialist can often read that chip directly. The chip surviving even when the screen, battery or board is damaged is the whole reason we can say yes so often.
First Things to Do, and What You Must NOT Do
The first hour matters, especially with liquid. What you do next can be the difference between an easy recovery and a much harder one. Start here:
- If it is wet, power it off and keep it off. Do not keep trying to turn a water-damaged phone on. Every power attempt while it is wet risks shorting the board and spreading damage.
- Do not charge a wet or dead water-damaged phone. Pushing power through a damp board is one of the fastest ways to turn a recoverable phone into a much harder case.
- Do not factory reset. A reset overwrites your data. If you are hunting through menus trying to fix it, stop before you erase the very photos you want back.
- Do not send it away wet. Mailing a damp phone gives corrosion days to spread. Get it assessed locally and fast instead.
- Act fast on liquid damage. Corrosion is a chemical reaction that keeps going the longer the phone stays wet inside. Same-day attention protects the chip.
- Do not put it in rice. Rice does almost nothing for the moisture deep inside and can leave dust and starch behind. Keep the phone cool and dry and get it to a technician.

A Simple Fix to Reach the Data, or Board-Level Recovery?
There is a big and hopeful difference between two kinds of dead phone, and knowing which one you have shapes everything.
The easy case: the phone just needs a small fix to reach the data. Many dead phones only need a new battery, a cleaned or replaced charging port, or a temporary working screen to boot up long enough for us to copy your photos off. The storage was never the problem. Once the phone powers up, the recovery is quick and straightforward. This is the majority of what we see.
The harder case: board-level or chip-level recovery. When a spill has corroded the board, or a component has failed, the phone may need micro-soldering work or, as a last resort, the storage chip read directly on specialist equipment. This takes more skill and time and the odds are lower, but it is still very often possible. During the assessment we tell you honestly which case you are in before you decide anything. Our broader overview of data recovery across Eastern Ontario walks through both paths in more detail.
Check the Cloud First: iCloud and Google Photos
Before anything technical, sit down at a computer or borrow another phone and check your cloud. If your photos were syncing, they may already be safe and this becomes a non-event. It is the single most valuable thing you can have, so always check:
- iPhone: Go to icloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID, then open Photos. If iCloud Photos or iCloud Backup was on, your pictures are likely already there and can be restored to any device.
- Android and Samsung: Go to photos.google.com and sign in with your Google account. Samsung owners can also check account.samsung.com for Samsung Cloud gallery backups.
- Not sure if it was on? Sign in anyway and look. Many people have automatic backup enabled without ever realizing it, and see years of photos appear.
If you find your photos in the cloud, you are essentially done and the dead phone becomes a simple repair-or-replace decision. If the cloud is empty, do not panic, because the photos can still be on the phone itself. That is where our assessment comes in.
The Honest Limits: When Photos May Not Be Recoverable
We would rather be honest with you than sell false hope. Data recovery is very often successful, but it is never guaranteed at one hundred percent, and there are real limits:
- A storage chip that has been physically destroyed, crushed or burned may be beyond recovery.
- Data that has been overwritten by a factory reset or by heavy continued use of the phone can be lost for good. This is why we say stop using the device.
- Severe, long-standing corrosion from water left inside a phone for weeks can eventually reach and damage the chip itself.
These cases are the exception, not the rule. But being upfront about them is part of doing this properly. That is also why we never charge you before we know what is possible.
How Our Doorstep Data Recovery Assessment Works
You should not have to box up a phone full of irreplaceable memories and hand it to a stranger with no idea what happens next. That is why we do it differently. We come to your home or office anywhere across Eastern Ontario, look at the phone in front of you, and tell you honestly whether the photos look recoverable and what it would take to get them back.
- Free assessment: We diagnose the phone at no cost and explain the situation in plain language, no jargon and no pressure.

Many recoveries also involve a quick repair to reach the data, such as a battery or screen, which we can handle in the same visit. If you later want the phone fully fixed, see our iPhone repair options. For a related situation where the screen is smashed but the phone still runs, our guide to data recovery from a broken phone covers the extra tricks that apply there.
The Bottom Line
A dead or water-damaged phone is frightening, but it very often does not mean your photos are gone. The storage chip that holds your memories is usually the last thing to fail, and in many cases it survives fully intact even when the screen, battery or board is damaged. The two things that matter most are acting fast, especially with liquid, and not making it worse by charging a wet phone or forcing a factory reset. Do those, and the odds are on your side.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you really recover photos from a phone that will not turn on?
Very often, yes. Your photos live on a flash storage chip that is separate from the screen, battery and charging port. When a phone will not power on, the problem is usually one of those other parts, not the storage itself. Once the phone is powered back up or the chip is read directly, the photos are usually intact. It is never a guarantee, which is why we start with a free assessment and work on a no recovery no fee basis.
My phone got wet. What should I do right now to save my photos?
Turn it off if it is still on and leave it off. Do not charge it, do not press the power button repeatedly, and do not put it in rice. Gently dry the outside, keep it somewhere cool and dry, and get it to a technician the same day. The biggest enemy after a spill is corrosion, which keeps spreading inside the phone the longer it stays wet and powered. Acting fast on liquid damage is the single most important thing you can do.
Does a water-damaged phone need to be fully repaired to get the photos back?
Not always. Sometimes the phone only needs to be cleaned and given a new battery or charging port to boot up long enough to copy everything off. In more serious cases we work at the board level or read the storage chip directly. During the free assessment we tell you which situation you are in before you decide anything.
I never backed up. Is it too late?
No. A cloud backup makes recovery instant and free, so it is always worth checking iCloud or Google Photos first. But if you never had one, the photos can still be on the phone itself and recoverable through a proper assessment. The important thing is to stop using the device and avoid factory resets, which can overwrite the very data you want back.
Are there cases where the photos genuinely cannot be recovered?
Yes, and we will always be honest about it. If the storage chip itself is physically destroyed, or if the data has been overwritten by a factory reset or heavy continued use, recovery may not be possible. Severe, long-term corrosion can also reach the chip. Success is never one hundred percent, which is exactly why we assess first and only charge if we actually get your data back.
How does your doorstep data recovery assessment work?
We come to your home or office anywhere across Eastern Ontario, assess the phone in front of you, and tell you honestly whether the photos look recoverable and what it would take. The assessment is free and we work on a no recovery no fee basis, so if we cannot get your data back, you do not pay for the recovery. Call or WhatsApp us to book a visit.
