Spilled Water or Coffee on Your Laptop? Do These 6 Things First
Just knocked a glass of water or a coffee onto your laptop? Move fast, but stay calm. The next few minutes matter more than anything a technician does later. As a doorstep repair service covering Eastern Ontario, we see spilled laptops every week: water, coffee, tea, pop, wine, and the occasional bowl of soup. The laptops that survive almost always have one thing in common: their owner acted in the first few minutes. Here is exactly what to do.
Why speed matters more than anything else
Liquid on its own is not what kills a laptop. It is electricity running through wet circuits plus corrosion eating the copper traces on the logic board as the liquid dries. Both begin the moment of the spill. Cut the power fast and clean it fast, and most laptops survive. Keep using it, and a repairable machine can become scrap.
Step 1: Shut it down immediately, do not wait for a normal shutdown
Do not reach for the Start menu or wait for a polite shutdown. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds to force the laptop off right now. Every extra second that power flows through a wet board is a second where a short circuit can happen. This one action, done quickly, saves more laptops than anything else on this list.
Step 2: Unplug the charger and remove the battery if it is removable
Pull the charging cable out of the wall and the laptop. If your laptop has a removable battery (many older and business laptops do, with a latch on the underside), slide it out. That fully cuts power to the board, which is exactly what you want. If the battery is sealed inside, as on most modern slim laptops, do not pry it open yourself. Leave that for the technician.
Step 3: Turn it upside down like a tent to drain it, do not shake it
Open the lid all the way, then stand the laptop upside down in an A shape or tent shape, keyboard facing down, over a towel. Gravity pulls the liquid back out through the keyboard and vents instead of letting it sink deeper toward the board. Do not shake it and do not tilt it wildly. Shaking just spreads the liquid to parts of the board it had not reached yet. Slow and steady draining is the goal.
Step 4: Wipe up the liquid and remove any obvious pooling
With a dry, lint-free cloth or paper towel, gently blot up any liquid you can see on the keyboard, palm rest, screen, and around the ports. Do not scrub, and do not push liquid into the seams. You are just removing the obvious pooling so less works its way inside. If a lot went in, keep the laptop tented on a dry towel while you arrange repair.
Step 5: Do not use rice, a hair dryer, or the power button to test it
These three mistakes turn savable laptops into dead ones every single week:
- Do not put it in rice. Rice cannot reach the moisture trapped under the keyboard and shields, and rice dust gets sucked into fans and ports. It just wastes the critical first few hours.
- Do not use a hair dryer, oven, or radiator. Heat pushes moisture deeper, warps plastics and adhesives, and can damage the battery. Warm forced air also blows contamination further across the board.
- Do not charge it or power it on to "test" it. This is the number one way people finish off a laptop that would otherwise have lived. Resist the urge to check if it still works. Keep it off until it has been opened and cleaned.
Step 6: Get it to a technician the same day
This is the step people skip, and it is the one that decides most outcomes. Corrosion starts within hours, not days, and sugary or salty liquids corrode fast. The sooner the board is opened, cleaned, and dried, the more of your laptop survives. Because we come to you, there is no waiting for a shop appointment or shipping your laptop away. We can be at your home or office across Eastern Ontario the same day and stop the damage while it is still fresh.
Why coffee, pop, and juice are worse than plain water
Not all spills are equal. Clean tap water is the most survivable, because if it is cleaned quickly it leaves relatively little behind. The problem is what is dissolved in everything else:
- Coffee, tea, pop, juice, and energy drinks are loaded with sugar and acids. As the liquid dries, that sticky residue stays conductive, so it keeps creating tiny short circuits and keeps eating the board. A laptop that survived the initial pop spill can still die a week later from the residue left inside.
- Salt water, sweat, wine, beer, and milk are aggressive too. Salt and acids keep corroding metal long after everything looks dry.
This is why a sugary or salty spill almost always needs a proper internal clean, even when the laptop seems fine right after. Wiping the top is not enough. The damage that matters is happening underneath.
What professional liquid damage repair actually involves
Here is why a proper clean beats any home remedy:
- Full disassembly down to the logic board, not just popping the back cover off.
- Isopropyl alcohol treatment with high strength alcohol to displace remaining water and dissolve fresh corrosion.
- Ultrasonic cleaning of the board, which vibrates sugar, salt, and corrosion out from under chips and connectors where no cloth or rice can ever reach.
- Corrosion removal under magnification, cleaning affected pads and traces one by one.
- Controlled drying, then careful reassembly.
- Full function test: power, screen, keyboard, trackpad, ports, speakers, camera, and charging.
What are the realistic odds of recovery?
The honest answer is that the laptops treated fastest do best. A small, clean water spill on a laptop that was shut down instantly and cleaned the same day has strong odds of a full recovery. A sugary drink that soaked in, or a laptop that someone kept using or tried to charge, has lower odds and may need board-level repair. Every hour of delay tips the odds the wrong way. We give you a straight assessment at your door before any work begins. For laptops that will not power on at all, our guide to a laptop that will not turn on covers what we check first.
Even a dead laptop usually still has your files
Here is the reassuring part. Even when a laptop takes too much liquid to be worth repairing, the storage drive very often survives, so your photos, documents, and work files are usually still recoverable. If your data matters more than the machine, tell us first, because it changes how we approach the job. We can pull your files off onto a safe drive or a new laptop. Frequently Asked Questions
I spilled water on my laptop. What is the very first thing to do?
Shut it down immediately. Do not wait for a normal shutdown menu. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds to force it off, then unplug the charger. Power plus liquid is what destroys the board, so cutting power in the first seconds gives your laptop the best chance to survive.
Should I try to turn my laptop on to see if it still works?
No. Powering it on or charging it to test it is the fastest way to turn a fixable laptop into a dead one. Even if the screen lights up, current running through a wet board causes short circuits and speeds up corrosion. Keep it off until a technician has opened it and cleaned it.
Is coffee or pop worse than plain water for a laptop?
Yes, much worse. Coffee, pop, juice, beer, and other sugary or sticky drinks leave behind sugar and acids that stay conductive and keep corroding the board long after the liquid looks dry. Salt water is aggressive too. These spills almost always need a full internal clean, even if the laptop still turns on at first.
Does putting a laptop in rice work?
No. Rice cannot reach the moisture trapped under the keyboard, shields, and connectors, and rice dust can get pulled into ports and fans. It only wastes the critical first few hours while corrosion spreads. Air drying helps the surface, but the minerals and sugars left inside keep doing damage until they are professionally cleaned off.
My laptop still works after the spill. Is it safe to keep using?
Not necessarily. Liquid leaves deposits that keep corroding the board for days or weeks. A laptop can work fine today and lose the keyboard, trackpad, charging, or the whole board later. If the spill was more than a few drops, or if it was any sugary drink, an internal inspection and clean now is cheap insurance against a much bigger failure.
Can you recover my files if the laptop is dead?
Very often, yes. Even when a laptop is not worth repairing, the storage drive usually survives the spill. We can pull your photos, documents, and work files off it and move them to a safe drive or a new machine. Tell us up front if your data matters more than the laptop, because it changes how we approach the job.
