How to Back Up Your Phone Before a Repair

Before any phone repair, back up your data. Most repairs, like screen replacement and battery swap, never touch your storage, but a backup turns a worst-case scenario into a minor inconvenience. Here is the complete 2026 checklist we give our own doorstep repair customers across Eastern Ontario, including the steps people most often miss: WhatsApp and broken screens.

How to back up your iPhone

Method 1: iCloud backup (easiest)

1. Connect to Wi-Fi.
2. Go to Settings, tap your name, then iCloud.
3. Tap iCloud Backup.
4. Tap Back Up Now.
5. Wait for it to finish (5 to 30 minutes depending on how much is new).

iCloud storage full? The free tier is only 5GB, which is why so many people have not had a successful backup in months. Either buy more storage for one month (check Apple for current iCloud+ plans) or use the computer method below, which uses no cloud storage at all. Check when your last backup actually succeeded: Settings, your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup shows the date. Method 2: computer backup (Finder or iTunes)

1. Connect the iPhone to your computer with a USB cable.
2. Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows).
3. Select your iPhone and click Back Up Now.
4. Tick Encrypt local backup and set a password you will remember. Without encryption, Health data, call history, and saved passwords are NOT included.

How to back up your Android phone

Google backup (all Android phones)

1. Go to Settings, System, Backup.
2. Make sure Back up to Google Drive is on.
3. Tap Back up now.

Samsung: two extra options worth using

• Samsung Cloud: Settings, Accounts and backup, Back up data. Covers settings, home layout, and messages tied to your Samsung account.
• Smart Switch: Samsung's free app makes a complete backup to a computer or an external USB drive, including things Google backup skips. Best choice before a bigger repair.

WhatsApp: the backup everyone forgets

WhatsApp chats are NOT fully covered by the normal phone backup. WhatsApp runs its own:

1. Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, Chats, Chat backup.
2. Tap Back Up Now (goes to iCloud on iPhone, Google Drive on Android).
3. If the media upload is huge, at least let the text backup finish.

We have met more than one customer whose phone restored perfectly except for years of family chat history. Two minutes here prevents that.

What actually gets backed up?

iCloud: photos, videos, contacts, messages, app data, device settings, and purchase history. Google: contacts, calendar, SMS, call history, app list with app data, settings, and photos if Google Photos backup is on. Neither one includes WhatsApp media by default, downloaded music from other services, or files sitting in random folders; check those separately if they matter.

What if the screen is too broken to tap?

If the display is black or touch does not respond, stop before you make it worse:

• If you have previously connected the phone to your computer and tapped Trust, a Finder or iTunes backup may still run over the cable with no screen input needed.
• Do not attempt blind taps or random button sequences; one wrong confirmation can wipe the phone.
• In most cases the practical fix is simple: we replace the screen first, then you back up. The data itself is on the storage chip and normally survives a smashed display.

Do I need to back up before a screen repair?

Screen replacement and battery replacement do not typically affect your data, and with our doorstep service the phone never leaves your sight. We still recommend a backup before any repair, because a phone that is already damaged can behave unpredictably. Water damage is the real exception: severe cases can require a reset during recovery, so back up the moment a wet phone still lets you.

Quick pre-repair checklist

• Run the phone backup (iCloud, Google, or computer).
• Run the WhatsApp chat backup separately.
• Confirm the backup date shows today.
• Know your Apple ID or Google password; you will need it if anything is restored.
